Welcome to Deadwood and Grimes

Undertakers to the Underworld for five millenia

The first book of the Deadwood and Grimes Underworld showing that Death is only a step on the path and not every path is worth taking.

The inspiration

Every story and every adventure starts with an idea. I had never intended to write a book, probably didn't think I had it in me, you may agree with that thought upon reading it,  but I had a moment....a dark moment. Who knows where it may have led and it doesn't serve anyone to dwell on that. What I can say is, from it came the idea, the thoughts of an organisation established to manage the Underworld, the Undertakers of the Underworld. Without realising it World, or rather Underworld, of Deadwood and Grimes began to form and would not leave me alone. It turns out the only way I can stop these constant nagging thoughts are to get them down on paper or screen, and so began the need to write, a need that was as alien to me as it was exciting.

My resolve to continue only increased when talking to my wife about the books she was reading, she mentioned that "it was a shame that someone always seemed to die in the story". In my head it was then obvious that if everyone was dead in the first place then the possibility of that disappointment of ever occurring was remote at best.

What's it all about then?

  The Underworld exists!

The parts that involve pain and suffering are constructed from our mortal fears and nightmares. All this however needs managing for nothing in Heaven or Hell happens by accident. The offices of Deadwood and Grimes were established around five millennia ago to administer all matters of the Underworld. Departments were many and varied to cater for all souls both on Earth and all other inhabited planets within the Universe. The day to day administration of souls is covered by the Housers, just a quill pusher of sorts, but for those problem cases, a Grimlayer is assigned. Tom is a Grimlayer going about his perpetual duties until he has an idea, it's a great idea so what can possibly go wrong?

Some Beasts of the Underworld

Frezal- Small wild cat-like creature prone to snarling rages and large bowel movements.

Necropod - An eight legged creature and the the size of a medium dog. they are kind of like the postal service for the Underworld.

Spike Bug - Just don't swallow one, they hurt going in and coming out.

Demon Mites - They're everywhere, virtually indestructible some have useful properties.

Wolvains- Description not really necessary, you can work this one out, let's just say if you need something done, look no further!

Bladderback - Large Bulbous Squid like work drone about the size of a London bus used for heavy lifting and tending the "forgotten" pathways.

Solpaths- Small cricket like animals working for both sides have an ability to detect and read human souls.

Wykydum-  small worker beasts about the size of a Beaver with similar abilities to lift with their arms and gnaw through anything except this is the underworld so you can guess the extras.
